The Chasm

Our second stop on the Milford Road was at The Chasm, where a waterfall marks the spot where the Cleddau River has carved its way through solid rock. We didn’t get the sense of the waterfall very well (although we could hear it) as we were looking down into the chasm. It was curious to walk through the surrounding rainforest and look up to see the snow-covered mountains in the not-too-far distance. From these photos, you can see how the silver fern has become the quasi-national emblem of New Zealand.
