Steamship Cruise to Walter Peak Sheep Station

We woke up to another beautiful day in Queenstown and took a cruise across Lake Wakatipu on the TSS Earnslaw to the Walter Peak Sheep Station. It was in the 70’s so we could enjoy being on deck.

We watched a sheep shearing demonstration. An expert can shear up to 150 sheep a day! We learned that different breeds of sheep are used for different items like clothing and carpets. Due to declining demand for wool, some ranchers have transitioned to cattle and deer farming.

Our next event was a sheep dog herding demonstration.

We had a chance to “meet and greet” the animals and to walk around the farm before lunch. The surrounding lake and mountain scenery was spectacular.

After a delicious lunch (all the food in New Zealand is home-grown), we had the opportunity to feed the deer, oxen and lambs.

Finally it was time to go, and we re-boarded the TSS Earnslaw for our cruise back to Queenstown.
