The Milford Road was closed just the day before due to an avalanche, and our tour director said he was actually planning alternate activities for today. We got lucky, though and the road was re-opened just in time for our visit to Fiordland National Park. I confess I was not quite prepared clothing-wise for the cold weather, but I made do with layering two long-sleeved pullovers and adding on my jacket. It wasn’t long, however, before I forgot about the weather.
On New Zealand’s official travel website, it states, “The road journey from Te Anau to Milford Sound is one of the most scenic experiences you can have on four wheels.” Like everything else New Zealand, I can assure you it is not an exaggeration nor a native boast. I’ll let my photos of this 75-mile scenic drive speak for themselves.
